K9 Sammy, who is certified with the National Police Canine Association, was welcomed to the department on Monday, Sept. 16. She is also certified with the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association as an Explosive Detection Police Service Dog and a certified Military Working Dog with the Department of Defense.
K9 Sammy has been partnered with Officer Franck DeAngelis, who has been a member of the department since August 2001.
Officer DeAngelis, who is currently assigned to the Patrol Division, has served as a Field Training Officer and has a “long-standing interest” in police canines. He attended a Police K9 Decoy School in Saint Lucie County, Florida, where he learned bite work, canine communication and animal behavior. After graduating, he trained with the Fairfield Police K9 Unit and other K9 Units throughout the State.
In 2007, he presented a proposal for the creation of a K9 unit, which was later accepted. The department welcomed its first canine in 2011, and it has continued to grow ever since.
“The Fairfield Police Department welcomes K9 Sammy and congratulates Officer Franck DeAngelis on his appointment to the K9 Unit,” department officials say.
